ANTIQUE & VINTAGE SNOWMOBILE CLUB of COLORADO

Well guys, in a couple of weeks, our  first snow month arrives, September, then in October we have the Denver Snow-Show.
Time for some official club discussion points for EVERYBODY to comment on.

1)  We've had some new collectors come on board over the summer with some fantastic iron and skills in restoration.
Should be an exciting winter for us as our group continues to grow.

2)  If you missed the open house at Dan Pickenpaughs house over Memorial Weekend, you kind of missed out on a great event.
I say "kind of" because you're still welcome to see Dan's collection - just by appointment.  He can me contacted by e-mail,
or checkout VSCA magazine for his complete contact information.  I'll have an article written on the weekend in a winter
addition of VSCA.  I'm just putting the final touches on it.

3)  Speaking of vintage sled publications, FOLKS, I highly encourage you to join the WSVSA membership
/Western States Vintage Snowmobile Association.  They host our webpage for Colorado.  The guys are putting out an ever
growing newsletter on each western state's activities.  For the summer edition, Colorado was well represented with Dan's
show and a few other highlighted items.   So with that, sign up, it's very cheap, and it supports the hobby and
spreads the enthusiasm.....including your own story and project.

 4) So, on the subject of your own project, what have you been up to this summer?  Send it in, and I'll get it up on the AVSCC
website and if you send it to me in the next 10 days, we'll get it published in the WSVSA newsletter.  Don't be shy.
Whether it's a restoration or a new addition - it's news, it's exciting and we want to hear about....so share it.

5) For the Denver Snow Show. If CSA invites us back, which they should, I'd like to have a table and a wallboard
with photos from last year's rides.  I plan on commandeering Dean's poster board that he had at Dan's house.
The table will be there so we can talk bystanders into a bizarre financial pyramid schemes only seen on late night TV, or,
have a sign-up sheet for more members to join in, hide an icebox with food and water under, and display more photos and
other memorabilia.   If you have more ideas for our area, please let me know, or we can just leave a old helmet on the ground.

6)  As you can see, I've attached a couple photos of this summer's projects from my garage, rebuilding my 80 el tigre motor.
I was surprised it ran as well as it did last year because every bearing in the crank was rotted with rust.

This will be my daily rider (and racer in Craig)...so I hope my mechanical skills don't fail me and it stays together.
But, since I did the work, I'm prepared for anything.    If nothing else, it looks nice under the hood now.
So with that, I can now make most of the rides that popped up last year.

They were:

Christmas Ride - Buena Vista/Cottonwood  Greg Lonero

Craig Western Ride In  Rena Olsen

Walden Ride  Dean and Marlen

Cottonwood Pass  II BBQ

Please share any comments to improve the attendance or promoting of these rides, get you dates to me and I'll get a calendar put together this fall.

If you watch the "Restorations" page on vintagesleds.com, you may have seen
the post about this sled. Mike Rigotti in Colorado, sent in this piece to AVSCC.
Here are a few photos along with Mike's submitted shot version story.

The goal was to make as close of replication of a 75 PDC sled as possible. After I studied pictures from the day, the
project began. The chassis started as a 77 TX. I was careful to make sure little things like the handle bar loop, tunnel
block off were correct. The seat, gas tank and sump tank are just like the original. The skis have been shortened (4”)
and narrowed with new loops bent to match the 75’s. I got the hood and pan from a guy that does not want his name used.
The motor is a 1975 500cc.

Kinda a strange story how I found it. A guy that lived by me had an old Evinrude Skeeter and a 81 Polaris cutlass SS
in his horse corral. I don’t know why I even stopped by but I did. He said he was told the Polaris had a special motor in it.
When I opened the hood I could not believe it was a 500 triple. The cutlass came with a fanner. So it was loaded in the
truck. As you know every restoration takes longer that you expect, but when done it sure is great. The plan now it to
just ride the crap out of it.  Mike Rigotti

Submitted by Greg Lonero

Despite the downtown roads being coated in black ice October 10 & 11, a huge and hardy snowmobile
crowd made it to the 2009 Denver Snow Show.    It was also the official public kick-off of the
Antique & Vintage Snowmobile Club of Colorado (AVSCC), and the vintage boyz came out of the woodwork to
check out the old sleds. We had a great amount of interests, of which can be attributed to our states iconic pioneers of
the vintage hobby which include Dan Pickenpaugh, Ray Shelton and Marlen Morgan to name of few, that have had
a display at the show for as long as I can remember.  I also got the opportunity to talk to some ol' Cat racers like
Darold Jones and Morgan Morehart who raced with Woody Held, the former major league player that raced for
Arctic Cat back in the day (whose Z I now own).

It was a day of sensory overload.  All the owners of the vintage sleds were busy all day, talking vintage sleds
and about the upcoming winter's rides and our much anticipated Craig Show - the Western Ride In.

Thanks to all who stopped by and if I didn't get a chance to talk with ya, I will on our upcoming Christmas weekend ride.

Enjoy the photos.

Greg Lonero has been busy laying the foundation for a new vintage club in Colorado.

The AVSCC...  Antique & Vintage Snowmobile Club of Colorado,  is just about ready to start taking on members.

Mission Statement

AVSCC will compliment current Colorado venues that promote the restoration of antique and Vintage snowmobiles.
We will Organize trail rides within the State of Colorado and cultivate friendships that will help other collectors
and owners of older sleds in their preservation and restoration efforts.

Our agenda will include two trail rides.  One will launch from Cottonwood Pass, in Buena Vista, CO over the 2009
Christmas / New Years Eve Holiday weekend.  The second will be at Rabbit Ears, after the Craig, CO western Ride In show.
Details to follow.

Please provide your e-mail address to Greg or Dean so you can get the specifics on the two trails rides.

For these two trail rides, the state of Colorado requires all sleds be registered. Contact Colorado State parks for complete details on registration.
